TSC to create more Lucrative Job Groups for Primary School Teachers

TSC to create more Lucrative Job Groups for Primary School Teachers: The Ministry of Education (MoE), TSC and the Parliamentary Committee on Education have some good plans for primary school teachers. They are set to initiate a process that will remove the D1 job group ceiling for primary school teachers.

There are currently seven (7) job groups for primary school teachers

Currently, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) classifies primary school teachers into seven (7) job groups. Each job group represents varying levels of responsibility and experience within the teaching profession.

According to the TSC’s job grading system, primary school teachers typically begin at Job Group B5 and can progress up to Senior Head Teacher serving at Job Group D1. But things are about to change because the government introduced junior schools in the primary section.

Breakdown of job groups for primary school teachers

Here is a breakdown of the job groups for primary school teachers:

Primary Teacher II / Job Group B5 (T-Scale 5)

This is the entry-level position for primary teachers. It is occupied by fresh graduates entering the teaching profession.

Primary Teacher I / Job Group C1 (T-Scale 6)

This one represents the next level of experience and responsibility. It is typically characterized by skills enhancement and significant contributions to the education system.

Senior Teacher II / Job Group C2 (T-Scale 7)

This has been for P1 teachers transitioning into secondary teaching. But the job group is now open for more experienced primary school teachers. In the past, it only provided opportunities for those with degrees. But that is no longer the case. It includes roles such as SNE Teacher II–Primary, Lecturer II, and Secondary Teacher III.

Senior Teacher I / Job Group C3 (T-Scale 8)

Primary teachers can advance to this level after assuming additional C3 responsibilities. The roles include Lecturer I, SNE Teacher I (Primary), Secondary Teacher II, and SNE Teacher II–Secondary.

Deputy Headteacher II / Job Group C4 (T-Scale 9)

Teachers in primary schools can transition into leadership and specialized teaching roles, such as Senior Master IV and SNE Senior Teacher–Primary. Those are the ones that belong to this grade.

Head Teacher / Job Group C5 (T-Scale 10)

This group indicates higher expertise and responsibility. Many head teachers belong here. Other teachers in this grade have roles like Senior Master III and Senior Lecturer III.

This is the highest level for primary teachers currently. It encompasses leadership and instructional roles such as Senior Master II and Deputy Principal III.

TSC to create job groups D2 and D3 for primary school heads

But TSC, MoE and the Parliamentary Committee on Education have started a process of introducing two more job groups for primary school headteachers. That will make nine (9) job groups for primary school teachers.

We will now have Grade D2 and D3 for the heads of institutions in the primary section. This is because junior school is domiciled in primary schools.
