The Ministry of Education makes Decision on schools reopening following heavy rains: Despite the ongoing heavy rainfall and flooding across the nation, schools are set to reopen for the second term next Monday. Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang made this announcement on Thursday.
The government has employed a multi-agency approach
He revealed that the government has established a multi-agency team to address the challenges posed by the severe weather conditions. All schools will commence their second term on Monday, April 29.
Dr. Kipsang expressed gratitude for the abundant rainfall experienced this year. He highlighted that the President has directed the formation of a multi-agency team to tackle the associated challenges. The Basic Education Principal Secretary was peaking at the inaugural Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment in Nairobi.

He emphasized that President William Ruto’s directive is part of the government’s efforts to ensure the smooth resumption of learning activities next week.
Reiterating the President’s directives, Kipsang assured that they are fully prepared for the reopening of schools. Teachers and other stakeholders are eagerly anticipating the return of children. He further emphasized that the Ministry of Education will collaborate with the multi-agency team to guarantee the safety of students upon their return to school.
Kenya Meteorological Department’s advisory
On Tuesday, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a heavy rain advisory. It urged citizens to remain vigilant as the torrential rains persist. According to David Gikungu, the director of meteorological services, they expect heavy rainfall to continue for the next seven days.
He cautioned that low-lying areas, floodplains, and urban areas with poor drainage should be prepared for flooding. Additionally, Gikungu warned of the risk of landslides on steep slopes if the soil becomes saturated with water.

Road users must exercise caution
The government has advised road users to exercise caution, as heavy downpours could lead to reduced visibility. Aviators and boat operators were also urged to be vigilant. The meteorological department anticipates strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning to accompany the heavy rains.
The adverse weather conditions are expected to disrupt marine activities. This will happen particularly in areas prone to large waves and severe winds.

Showers and thunderstorms to rock some counties
The weather department has also forecasted morning showers in several counties. Those in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin should expect showers and thunderstorms.
The weatherman expects this throughout the afternoon and night in various locations. They are anticipating similar weather patterns in other regions.
