How Senior Schools will implement career paths from Grade 10: The Principal Secretary of Basic Education, Dr. Richard Belio Kipsang, has said that the ministry wants each senior school to offer two career pathways for students in grades 10 through 12.
Kipsang added that the goal of this effort is to get the most from the money invested in the CBC system. He stressed that every school needs to offer at least two pathways for the system to make economic sense.
Some national schools will offer three pathways
Dr. Kipsang also said that some national schools (not all) will offer up to three career pathways. They include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), Social Sciences, Performing Arts, Music, and Sports.
Kipsang said these things at a meeting with stakeholders. The meeting was about teaching and senior school education. It took place at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi.

The principal secretary asked everyone involved in senior schools’ education to work with the government to put schools into different groups. He insisted that this would be very important as it will give clear instructions on how to run senior schools as the ministry gets ready to start accepting kids in 2026.
The learners’ interests will come first
Kipsang also stressed on how important it is to take into account both the learner’s interests and national standards when planning for different career pathways. He also advised students to think about venturing into two pathways, majoring in one and minoring in the other.

He had doubts about the level of learning, the balance between theory and practice, and the methodologies that teachers will use to evaluate students during the three-year senior high school program.
Members of parliament discussing the Sessional paper
On March 20, Ezekiel Machogu, who is the cabinet secretary for education, said that the ministry has made a sessional paper available for parliament. The parliamentarians will look at it and see the details of all the career pathways that senior schools will offer the learners from Grade 10 to Grade 12.
Mr. Machogu did not wish to go into details of the debate in parliament. He said that the government will make the sessional paper public after the members of parliament debate it.
He also commended the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) for their good work on the new curriculum for senior school learners.
“The goal of this CBC curriculum is to help students specialize and improve their skills in many areas. We want to help talented people. Some of us are very good at the arts, but not everyone is good at science or the humanities,” Machogu said.
