Govt to Sack all Striking JSS Intern Teachers

Govt to Sack all Striking JSS Intern Teachers: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a stern warning to intern teachers who have not reported to work since the second term began. The commission has threatened the termination of their positions.

TSC to collect attendance reports

TSC will collect attendance reports from all schools by Friday to determine disciplinary actions based on these records. Cavin Anyuor, the Director of Legal Affairs at TSC, revealed this directive. He was speaking during a session with the National Assembly Education Committee. Anyuor revealed that the reports are due on May 17.

The conflict between TSC and intern teachers has been ongoing. A court ruling in April declared the internship program illegal because of the discrepancy in pay for equal work. Despite a stay order permitting TSC to continue employing interns until August 1, tensions remain high.

KeJUSTA leadership has dismissed the threats

Daniel Murithi, Secretary-General of the Kenya Junior Secondary Teachers Association, stressed that TSC’s directive for interns to return to work would not deter their resolve. He pointed out that TSC’s call for interns to resume work indicates that many are not complying.

TSC also highlighted the financial strain of converting all intern positions into permanent roles. It cited a budget shortfall of Sh30 billion. To address this, the commission proposed a phased absorption plan. The government aims to hire 26,000 interns starting in January 2025. TSC has set an initial budget requirement of Sh8.3 billion for the first cohort.

The issue escalated when nearly 60,000 intern teachers boycotted their duties at the start of the second term. They are demanding better pay and the conversion of their contracts to permanent and pensionable status.

The commission will sack defiant JSS intern teachers

Anyuor reiterated TSC’s position, acknowledging that some interns are participating in the boycott. He emphasized that data collection by the end of the week would identify those who have returned to their duties and those who have not. Subsequently, stern action will be taken according to the teacher’s code of conduct.

Despite these challenges, some legislators have shown support for the intern teachers. They are advocating for their absorption into the workforce under improved contracts by July.
