CS Machogu Rolls Out New School Academic Calendar 2024: Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has revealed strategies to recover the instructional time lost during the recent floods.
As communicated by the CS, intensified rainfall caused a one-week delay for students, who were originally slated to resume on April 29, 2024. Nonetheless, President William Ruto’s decision to indefinitely extend school closures due to flooding was subsequently reconsidered based on advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Term Two commenced on Monday, May 13
Term two commenced on Monday, May 13, adhering to a structured timeline that projects its conclusion on August 5. Notably, there will be a midterm break from June 20 to June 23, then an extended three-week vacation from August 5 to August 25.
As expected, term two for teachers’ training institutions commenced on April 29 and it will extend until August 2. Their August holidays are slated between August 5 and August 30.

Outlined within the revised school calendar for the Second Term are key dates:
- May 13 marked the nationwide reopening of schools after an extended April holiday.
- June 20 signifies the commencement of a half-term break spanning four days.
- August 5 designates the day when schools will close for the August holidays, albeit subject to Machogu’s updates. Machogu is strongly against the idea of extending term dates.
- August 23 is when schools will reopen for term three.
Half-term Break:
- Duration: June 20th to June 23rd, 2024
August Holiday:
- Commencement: August 5th, 2024
- Conclusion: August 23rd, 2024
- Duration: 3 weeks
Term 3, 2024: After the August holidays, the final term of the academic year will be nine weeks long. It will run from August 26 to October 25.
- School Opening Dates: August 26th, 2024
- School Closing Dates: October 25th, 2024
- Duration: 9 weeks

KNEC Examinations
KPSEA & KILEA Exams: Examinations for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA), are slated as follows;
- Start Date: October 28th, 2024
- End Date: October 31st, 2024
- Duration: 4 days
KCSE Exams: KNEC has scheduled the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations from November 4 to 22.
- Start Date: November 4th, 2024
- End Date: November 22nd, 2024
- Duration: 3 weeks
These assessments will precede an extensive December holiday, spanning from October 28 to January 3, 2025.
December Holiday:
- Commencement: October 28th, 2024
- Conclusion: January 3rd, 2025
- Duration: 10 weeks
The final semester for teacher training institutions will last 11 weeks from August 26 to November 8, and then there will be a long holiday break from November 11 to January 3, 2025.
