TSC finally responds to the JSS intern teachers’ strike and Issues new directive

TSC finally responds to the JSS intern teachers’ strike and issues new directive: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) issued a call for all participating interns to adhere to the court order and return to their designated schools. TSC was responding to recent media reports on teacher intern protests across the country.

Officially, teaching and learning activities resumed in all public schools on May 13, 2024. Dr. Jamleck Muturi John, Chairman of TSC, reiterated the Commission’s dedication to addressing issues within the teaching service. He said TSC prioritizes stakeholders’ interests.

The internship programme belongs to the national government

Muturi emphasized that internship programme belongs to the national government.

“The national government’s Teacher Internship Programme is a vehicle for practical working experience,” he said. The TSC chairman affirmed its significance in the educational landscape.

Forum for Good Governance and Human Rights

Amidst legal challenges, the Forum for Good Governance and Human Rights petitioned the Court, contesting the internship program’s legitimacy.

While the Court ruled in favor of the petitioner, it stayed the judgment until August 1, 2024, allowing the program to persist temporarily. The junior secondary teachers are not taking the ruling lightly.

The junior secondary school (JSS) teachers staged a nationwide protest. They have vowed not to step in class until they receive their permanent and pensionable letters.

The protest has disrupted learning in public junior schools

The JSS moguls’ protest has disrupted the commencement of the second term’s learning activities.

These teachers demanded permanent and pensionable employment, under the leadership of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET). According to them, the KES 17,000 that they take home monthly is an insult to their profession.

They cited their qualifications, TSC credentials, and teaching licenses. However, court documents revealed the commission’s financial constraints in converting the 46,000 interns to permanent roles. This is because of the insufficient appropriations by the national assembly for the current fiscal year.
