The 13 Types of TSC Allowances Available for Teachers

The 13 Types of TSC Allowances Available for Teachers: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) provides different types of allowances to teachers. These allowances can be categorized as either remunerative or reimbursable.

The two major types of allowances

Remunerative allowances, integrated into salaries, consist of two types:

  1. Automatic allowances, including House, Medical, Hardship, and Commuter allowances, are regularly paid.

It is important to mention a few things regarding these allowances. Firstly, TSC does not factor medical allowance in the teachers’ pay slips. The government decided to enroll all teachers in a comprehensive medical scheme. Many teachers were not for the idea, as they preferred the medical allowance in their bank accounts. This is because TSC deducts NHIF contributions from the same teachers.

Hardship allowance depends on the location where a teacher works. There are over 30 hardship zones that the government has gazetted. The amount a teacher receives as hardship allowance depends on their job groups.

The house allowance is also not uniform. There are four different clusters of house allowances with teachers within the Nairobi Region, taking home the highest amount.

Allowances that require application

  1. Allowances requiring application, such as responsibility, special duty, readers’, interpreters’, school, and transfer allowances, are disbursed based on specific criteria.

Reimbursable allowances are recoverable upon application and include travel expenses. Teachers are eligible for reimbursement under certain circumstances, including:

  • When interdiction is lifted,
  • For interview-related travel
  • Travel to a first posting outside the home district
  • Travel from a duty station beyond the home district after retirement
  • Commuting during school breaks between hardship areas and home districts, with the home district located outside the hardship area.

Applicants must adhere to specific procedures during application process.

Applicants must adhere to prescribed procedures and provide supporting documentation. Daily sustenance allowance for official assignments requires application at least 14 days before travel.
