Ministry of Education Confirms New Half-Term Dates in Latest Directive: In a recent directive from the Ministry of Education, the half-term break for schools has been postponed by a week. This is because of the widespread heavy rains that delayed school reopenings. Originally set from June 20 to 23, 2024, the new half-term dates are now June 26 to 28, 2024.
Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang made the announcement
Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary of Basic Education, announced this change in a circular. The circular was sent to all county directors of education.
The circular also specified that students in boarding schools are required to return by June 30, 2024.

“Learners in boarding schools are expected to report back on June 30, 2024. The change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules,” the circular stated.
This change might affect the co-curricular activities calendar especially in the lower levels. The rescheduling might necessitate revisions to existing plans and timetables.
Closing dates remain unchanged
Despite the adjustment to the half-term break, the end date for the school term remains unchanged. This second academic term will conclude on August 2, 2024.

Before schools reopened, Dr. Kipsang highlighted that the Ministry of Education and school administrators had decided against extending the second term of the school calendar.
However, he did not completely rule out the possibility, indicating that the ministry would closely monitor the academic progress throughout the term.

He also mentioned that the lost instructional time could potentially be made up.
The Ministry is considering moving the KNEC Examination dates forward
An extension of the school term, if eventually deemed necessary, might have implications for the scheduling of national examinations.
Dr. Kipsang reassured that the ministry is committed to ensuring that students can catch up on any missed learning without disrupting the overall academic calendar.
The ministry’s ongoing assessment will determine whether further adjustments are needed as the term progresses.
