DP Gachagua Says Govt will Extend Schools Opening Dates in some Areas

DP Gachagua Says Govt will Extend Schools Opening dates in some Areas: The national government declared on Friday, April 26, its intention to adjust school opening dates on a case-by-case basis. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, spoke during a press briefing on ongoing floods from his Karen residence.

The education ministry will collaborate with counties

Gachagua revealed that the Ministry of Education will collaborate with county governments to agree on the way forward. They will evaluate the situation locally before advising parents and students regarding any alterations.

The DP urged students from unaffected schools to adhere to the regular academic calendar. He emphasized the need for a nuanced approach. Mr. Gachagua stressed that each situation would be carefully assessed on its own merits.

The unaffected schools should adhere to the calendar

If deemed necessary, opening days could be extended. However, the unaffected schools would proceed as scheduled for the benefit of the nation.

Meanwhile, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang disclosed that the Ministry had initiated assessments in Nairobi County.

Specifically, Dr. Kipsang noted that 64 schools in the county would have their opening dates adjusted. This is due to infrastructure damage caused by demolitions. However, unaffected schools would maintain their original schedules.

Disruptions in Nairobi County

Kipsang highlighted the substantial disruptions faced by 64 schools in Nairobi County. The disruptions encompass both classrooms and dormitories. To avoid a blanket directive affecting all schools, the Ministry opted to address these issues locally.

He further elaborated that Nairobi County boasts 210 public and 800 private schools. The principal secretary indicated the potential delay in opening for the aforementioned 64 institutions. Most of the affected institutions are from the slum areas.

Many schools from the informal settlements are submerged in flood water. The rains have destroyed several pieces of school equipment and classrooms. In short, some learners do not have schools to go back to.That is why the Govt will extend schools opening dates in the affected areas.

Official schools opening date

Schools are slated to resume for the second term on Monday, April 29. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport will shoulder some responsibility. It will repair essential infrastructure for school buses and students, including roads and bridges. Many roads and their related infrastructure have been damaged, along with other facilities.
