Polytechnic Teacher Salary in Kenya: Polytechnic lecturers play a vital role in vocational and occupational education. They cater to students pursuing careers that don’t necessarily require university-level education.
To qualify for this role, individuals must hold a relevant diploma or degree in the field they wish to teach. In the past, they all had to be certified by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). However, nowadays, polytechnic tutors are not under the TSC. The government transferred their services to the public service commission.
When the government transferred these tutors to the public service commission (PSC), it elevated many of them to higher job groups. Their perks are also slightly improved when we compare them to teachers under the TSC.
The salary range of polytechnic teachers
It’s crucial to understand the salary range and job responsibilities associated with being a polytechnic teacher. This is because it is a significant career path.

Who employs polytechnic teachers?
It is also important to note that polytechnics are under the State Department of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Their salaries are processed by the PSC. The PSC can engage tutors with specialized qualifications but with no pedagogy/andragogy. Those are the ones that earn the least.
But once the PSC engages a tutor with no pedagogy (one who has not taken an education-related course), it requires them to acquire pedagogy qualifications from a recognized institution.
Responsibilities of a polytechnic teacher
Polytechnic teachers shoulder a multitude of responsibilities, including:
- a) Developing curricula and devising instructional methods.
- b) Instructing and overseeing students’ use of tools and equipment.
- c) Evaluating student work and providing feedback.
- d) Administering tests to assess student progress and competency.
- e) Maintaining records of grades, attendance, and training activities.
- f) Supervising projects, field placements, and laboratory work.
- g) Providing individualized instruction to students as needed.
- h) Conducting on-the-job training sessions to demonstrate various procedures.
- i) Identifying training needs and collaborating with industry and education sectors.
- j) Delivering lectures and facilitating discussions to enhance student learning.
Polytechnic teachers play a pivotal role in shaping education standards, much like their counterparts in other teaching categories. Their dedication to providing quality education and equipping students with practical skills is essential for preparing them for their chosen careers.
