An 85-year-old woman by the name Sindege Mayaka was one of the victims of the mob injustice incident in Kisii yesterday. A mob of angry youth lynched the old lady alongside four others on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.
Earlier today on Royal Media’s Kisii vernacular radio station Egesa FM, the Ekebago Show presenter Nana Diva asked people to share their thoughts about the incident. It happened in Marani area, Kitutu Chache North Constituency.
Many listeners condemned the act and called upon the police to arrest all those that were involved. The four ladies could not defend themselves because the mob only listened to one side of the story.
We cannot defend the act of witchcraft if indeed it exists. At the same time, it is not right to kill. Two wrongs don’t make a right. There is no way you can prove beyond reasonable doubt that another person practices witchcraft.
When people kill an old woman by burning her like those people did, it does not make them any better. In fact, they are worse because they sinned in broad day light yet the victim was only a suspect.
Sindege Mayaka had sold her cow
Meanwhile the old lady, Sindege Mayaka had KES 20,000 after she had sold her cow. The money was to help seek treatment for her swollen feet. At her age, you expect such health problems. That money was taken before she was killed. The Egesa FM presenter spoke to her family members live on radio.

The 85-year-old helpless woman was taken by a mob of rowdy youths from her home in Nyagonyi Village to Nyagonyi Secondary School grounds where she was lynched.
She tried to plead with them but all in vain. She told them she was not a witch but none of them listened. Even her son who tried to query them was attacked by the mob.
Her old mattress and a few belongings that were taken from her house were used to burn her to death. We should not tolerate such primitive acts in this century. The perpetrators of the heinous act must face the full force of the law.
