Fred Matiang’i has been camping in Laikipia to restore order in the area after attacks by the Pokot bandits.
Even as insecurity rises, displaced families in Laikipia have rejected away dwellings built by Interior Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
The CS began a rebuilding operation of homes destroyed by the bandits on Saturday, September 11.
He asked local evictees in their hundreds to return to their homes.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, September 12, residents of Laikipia expressed apprehension about returning to their houses.
They claim it was too dangerous for them to go back to their homes.
Laikipia Residents Reject Houses Built By Matiang’i
Locals said that it was foolish for the government to build the houses and then expect people to return home .
This is because they believe bandits were still on the loose.
“This is the second time they have evicted me from my home;
I can’t return because of my diabetes,” a woman seeking refuge at a school revealed.
Another resident corroborated her claims, adding that several of the bandits hid in cornfields.
“According to Citizen TV, one person remarked, “My wish for the government is that they flash out all the bandits .
This will enable us to live in peace; it’s ludicrous that they’re building us houses while the bandits are still hiding out;
we won’t be able to appreciate the buildings.”
Matiang’i was at Ol Moran for the second day in a row to direct an operation to rebuild the houses.
He also oversaw delivery food and medical aid to evictees from the government and other well-wishers.
The goal was for hundreds of evictees to return home, allowing for the continuation of classes in closed 16 schools.
The CS observed calm was returning during his visit to the area after the region went without a single incident on Friday, September 10.
“I’m thankful to God that we reported no incidents last night because that’s exactly what we want the residents of this region”.
“We’ve increased our presence here,” Matiang’i added, “and we’ve started building on the Ol-Moran Police Divisional Headquarters.
The headquarters will have over 100 police officers as its key feature.”
