Laikipia University fraternity was thrown into mourning yesterday after one of their students was murdered in broad daylight. The incident happened in the institution’s main campus.
An outsider who witnesses believe is her roommate’s boyfriend stabbed the young girl several times. The deceased’s name is Gertrude Chepkoech, and she was a first-year student at Laikipia University.
According to a news report that was aired on NTV, eye witnesses identified the man that did the heinous act as Ezra. After killing Gertrude, he turned the knife on himself and attempted to commit suicide.
Eye witness account
An eye witness narrated what transpired after Ezra tried to escape from the scene of crime.
“We had screams from the hostel and we rushed to see what was happening. That is when we found Gertrude lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. When the guy realized we had cornered him, he stabbed himself in the neck and in the abdomen,” said the eyewitness.
The mob that gathered around the scene of crime did not spare him even after he had injured himself badly. They gave him a dog’s beating. Even though he did not die on the spot, they left him in critical condition.
A cleaner that works in the fateful hostel gave a statement saying that the man had visited the room recently. A disagreement between the guy and his girlfriend led to a quarrel. The scuffle attracted attention and the hostel management kicked him out.
He was then warned never to step anywhere near the university premises. It seems he had other ideas and now he has taken away the life of an innocent student.
Police officers on the scene took Gertrude’s body to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital Mortuary. The murderer’s girlfriend was not immediately found to give her side of the story. It is so heartbreaking to Gertrude’s family who have lost such a young soul.
