New TSC Requirements for a Teaching Course in Kenya

You probably have a relative, friend, or colleague who wants to know the latest TSC requirements for a teaching course in Kenya. There are so many categories of teachers in the new competency-based curriculum (CBC). We have pre-primary school teachers, primary school teachers, junior secondary school teachers (JSS), and senior school teachers.

The Teachers Service Commission of Kenya (TSC) recently decided to do away the PTE certificate course, popularly known as P1. They introduced the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) to all primary school teachers. The course has a minimum requirement of a C plain grade in KCSE. A restriction of scoring at least a C plain in mathematics was removed after a public outcry.

English is a core subject when pursuing a teaching course. This is because all the learning areas except Kiswahili use English as a medium of instruction.

Even early childhood education teachers now need to pursue a diploma course for them to be eligible to be employed by the government. The following are some of the teacher education courses and their requirements:

Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECD)

To pursue a diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECD), you need to score a C-plain in KCSE or an ECDE certificate from KNEC. To pursue a certificate in early childhood education (ECDE) that will enable you to do DECD, you need to score a C-minus in KCSE or a D+ with a KNEC proficiency certificate.

Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE)

This is traditionally known as a P1 course. The curriculum is almost the same, but at the end of it all; you receive a diploma that will enable you to enter the teaching service at a higher job group. The minimum requirements for a DPTE course is a C plain in KCSE or a C-minus for those who are abled differently (e.g., visually or hearing impaired).

Diploma in Education (Arts) for post-primary education teachers

To pursue this teaching course, you need to score a minimum KCSE grade of C+ plus. You also need to score a C+ plus in each of your two teaching subjects. On top of that, you must score at least C plain in English and a D+ plus in Mathematics.

Diploma in Education (Science) for post-primary education teachers

The requirements are almost the same (minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ plus, C plain in English, C+ plus in each of the two selected teaching subjects). However, you must score at least a C plain in mathematics to pursue a diploma in education science.

Bachelor of Education (Arts)

The minimum KCSE mean grade to pursue an education arts course is C+ plus. Besides that, you also need to score C+ plus in each of your two teaching subjects. Remember, TSC has given these guidelines to various institutions offering these courses. However, if you insist on choosing a subject that does not meet the minimum entry grade and graduate, it will be difficult for you to be registered as a teacher by TSC.

Bachelor of Education (Science)

Here, you need a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ plus. Additionally, you must score a C+ in at least to science subjects. The main science subjects include Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Mathematics Alternative A is also considered a science.
