22-year old mask vendor Bonface Mwangi Kariuki who was tragically shot by the police is dead. The young man was shot during the June 17 protests. He died today June 30 at Kenyatta National Hospital after the doctors declared him brain dead.
A team of highly experienced doctors tried their best to have him live. They removed the bullets and other fragments from his brain on the same day he was shot.
On the day of the fateful incident, Bonface was selling masks during the “Justice for Albert Ojwang” protests. He was unarmed when two police officers walked towards him and one of them casually shot him and walked away.
Family spokesperson Emily Wanjira confirmed his death
Bonface Kariuki’s family spokesperson, one Emily Wanjira confirmed his death, a day after the medics had declared him brain dead. His father Jonah Kariuki appealed for justice as he fondly remembered his only son.

“They have rob bed me of my only son. I hope justice will be done,” said Jonah while sobbing. The dad also appealed for financial support as the family has been left with a hefty hospital bill, close to KES 3 million.
The officers that killed Bonface Mwangi Kariuki
The two police officers that sent Bonface to his early grave are Klinzy Barasa Masinde and Duncan Kiprono. They have since been arrested and arraigned in court charged by IPOA and DCI. Klinzy and Kiprono were initially charged of causing grievous harm but they will now face murder charges.
The public is now up in arms demanding justice for Bonface Kariuki and end of police brutality. The Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen is also on the spot. He is on record giving the police officers a shoot to kill order.
Boniface’s death on June 30, 2025, marks a tragic escalation in the fight against police violence in Kenya. He was an unarmed vendor shot at close range. Now his passing has intensified national demands for true accountability in law enforcement.
