Why TSC has Deregistered 65 Teachers

Why TSC has Deregistered 65 teachers: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has swiftly responded, announcing the expulsion and cancellation of registration for 65 teachers because of various infractions.

TSC has been deregistering them progressively

According to a notice issued on Friday, April 20, the TSC has deregistered and expelled 23 teachers since October 23, 2023. A further 43 teachers were deregistered as of March 8, 2024. The commission reached this decision after careful consideration of the circumstances of these individuals.

In the published gazette notification, TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia affirmed that these teachers were found guilty of charges leveled against them. TSC charged them under Section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act 2012. However, neither Macharia nor the Commission disclosed the specific allegations against these teachers.

The deregistration of these teachers falls under Section 30 of the Teachers Service Commission Act 2012. The TSC Act (2012) outlines various grounds for removal from the register.

Common reasons why TSC removes teachers from its register

These offences include falsified registration information, convictions for criminal or sexual offenses. Other grounds that can make TSC deregister a teacher are physical or mental conditions that render them unfit for teaching.

TSC has dismissed many teachers and removed them from their register because of canal knowledge. Molesting a student is an unforgivable offence in Kenya.

According to Section 30(5) of the Act, teachers removed from the register lose their teaching status as of the removal date. However, reinstatement is possible under the Commission’s strict supervision to ensure adherence to professional standards.

Section 44(b) of the TSC Act underscores the severity of misrepresentation by imposing penalties for falsely claiming to be a registered teacher. Offenders may face fines of up to Ksh100,000, imprisonment, or both. It all depends on the gravity of such deceit.

Additionally, the Act imposes sanctions on unregistered teachers and institutions employing unregistered personnel. This aims to uphold the integrity and quality of education delivery across the board.

Previous deregistration of teachers

The recent action taken by the TSC mirrors similar measures undertaken in previous years. In 2022, over 100 teachers were deregistered by the TSC for various infractions. In 2023, a Gazette Notice detailed the dismissal of 73 teachers for disciplinary reasons.

CEO Nancy Macharia emphasized that individuals removed from the register must cease all educational activities immediately. Notably, ten of the dismissed teachers were also removed from their positions by the respective Boards of Management (BOM).

A registered teacher can be removed from the register even if the commission has not employed them. As a result, the government insists that the boards of management only hire teachers who have TSC numbers.
