TSC explains why it sacked the 742 JSS Intern Teachers: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has confirmed that only 742 junior secondary school intern teachers have been dismissed. This is after the countrywide mass protests demanding permanent employment.
These nationwide protests began on May 13, coinciding with the reopening of schools for the second term.
TSC issued show-cause letters earlier
On May 22, TSC issued show-cause letters to the protesting teachers who had failed to report to work. The commission gave the teachers a two-week deadline to respond to these letters.

According to the Commission, 10,348 teachers who had been absent from their duties since May 13, 2024, were required to justify their absence.
“10,348 who absented themselves from work from May 13, 2024, were given show-cause letters to explain their whereabouts,” stated the Commission.

Of the 10,348 teachers who received show-cause letters, 9,606 responded within the given timeframe. However, 742 teachers who neither reported back to work nor provided an explanation for their absence had their contracts terminated and were subsequently replaced. This group represents 1.6% of the total 46,000 interns employed by TSC nationwide.
The termination letters are dated June 6
Chaimoto News has seen some of the termination letters sent by the TSC to these intern teachers. The letters are dated June 6.
According to these letters, TSC dismissed several teachers for “professional misconduct.” In the termination letters, TSC indicated that it terminated the teachers’ internships effective June 6, 2024. The commission dismissed them because of their abandonment of duty since May 13, 2024.

The commission had given the teachers a chance
TSC had given the teachers a chance to explain why it should not terminate their internships for professional misconduct. The commission outlined this in the show-cause letters dated May 22, 2024.

After reviewing the responses, TSC found some of them unsatisfactory, resulting in the termination of 742 intern teachers.
The TSC emphasized its commitment to maintaining professional standards among its intern teachers across the country.
