President William Ruto Postpones Schools Reopening Until Further Notice: President Ruto has commanded CS Machogu to extend the school reopening date indefinitely. This is because of the persistent heavy rains that are causing widespread flooding.

Schools were meant to resume on May 6

Originally slated for April 29, the reopening of basic education institutions was already pushed to May 6, 2024. However, resumption of studies for Kenyan schools now stands postponed until the situation stabilizes.

President Ruto, while addressing the nation, highlighted the severity of the flooding. He reiterated that floods have affected every corner of the country. Apart from destroying of important schools’ infrastructure, they have disrupted transportation. Many roads have been destroyed and are currently impassable.

Many Kenyans have lost their lives

The president emphasized the threat that swollen rivers and overflowing dams downstream pose. He reported a death toll of 210, with numerous injuries and extensive property damage.

Ruto lamented the ongoing hazardous conditions, foreseeing further escalation. The meteorological department has predicted continued heavy rains for the foreseeable future.

Cyclone Hidaya

Apart from the destructive rains, the weather department has predicted that Cyclone Hidaya will hit the Kenyan Coast. The effects are unimaginable, as it will be characterized by heavy rains, strong winds and very severe waves.

The effects will be worse than the deadly flood situation that many parts of Kenya have experienced.

Members of Parliament should reallocate CDF funds

In response to the crisis, Ruto called upon members of Parliament to reallocate their Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations. Rebuilding the flood-damaged school infrastructure should take up a sizable portion of the funds.

This urgent call to action aims to prioritize the restoration of educational facilities. It will ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff once schools eventually reopen.
