Orphaned Form 1 Girl Attempts Taking Poison After A School In Kisii Chased Her Away For Lack Of Fees

Cases of bright students missing on their chance to join form one have been on the rise due to poverty levels and harsh economic times that Kenyans are faced with mainly due to the Covid -19 pandemic and poor government policies that are supposed to ensure poor students get their chance to go to school.

The money provided by the constituency development fund for bursaries is not enough because of the high number of needy cases. Those who have been lucky have been funded by well-wishers, corporates, and various county governments.

Janet Kerubo Otwori is one such case. She secured a chance to join Kereri girls in Kisii after passing highly in KCPE. Kereri Girls High School is one of the best schools in Kisii going by the infrastructure in place and how they perform in the national exams.

Janet is a total orphan from Bonchari constituency in Kisii County after her parents died as a result of domestic violence. Her father killed her mother after a domestic row and the father was lynched by irate members of the public after his evil act.

Janet has been under the care of well-wishers and yesterday she was supposed to report to school which she did in slippers and her primary school uniform without paying even a cent as school fees.

The School principal Mrs. Teresa Atieno chased her away to go and pay the sixty-two thousand shillings before she can be admitted into the school. Dejected and feeling hopeless, Janet resorted to taking a pesticide to end her life but luckily her neighbors and siblings saved her life before she could do the worst.

We urge the county government of Kisii, their area member of parliament, and well-wishers to help the girl achieve her dream of joining Kereri High school to better her life and that of her siblings.
