Moi Girls High School Bus Swept by Floods with 52 People on Board

Moi Girls High School Bus Swept by Floods with 52 People on Board: A close call unfolded when floodwaters swept away a bus from AIC Moi Girls High School. It was carrying 52 passengers. The victims narrowly averted a humongous tragedy.

The bus is part of a batch of ten donated to secondary schools and community institutions nationwide. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta donated this particular one in 2021. It was involved in the harrowing incident on Sunday night in Suradiru, Samburu County.

County Police Commander confirmed the incident

Thomas Ototo, the County Police Commander, confirmed the occurrence. The CPC highlighted the location as being within Samburu County.

Footage circulating online captured the aftermath. It depicted the first responders aiding the stranded occupants as the bus lay overturned. Thankfully, no casualties or injuries had been reported at the time of reporting.

The driver tried to navigate a flooded river

Reports indicated that the mishap unfolded along the Maralal-Wamba Road when the driver endeavored to navigate a flooded river.

The unfortunate event transpired shortly before Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu postponed the school’s reopening to Monday, May 6. Widespread flooding caused by incessant rainfall in the preceding week prompted the decision.

The Mai Mahiu Tragedy

Tragically, the incident coincided with reports of twenty fatalities resulting from flash floods that ravaged homes in Kamuchiri Village, Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, because of heavy rains.

The Kenya Red Cross disclosed that floodwaters surged after a nearby river burst its banks on Sunday night. The area is prone to such incidents every rainy season. The Narok- Mai Mahiu road is currently impassable.

Stephen Kirui, a police captain in Naivasha, verified the occurrence. He indicated that several individuals had been transported to Naivasha Hospital for medical attention.

Various response teams, including the Kenya Police, County Disaster Team, Kenya Red Cross, and local residents, moved with speed to rescue the victims from the dire situation.
