Kenya’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics star and 10,000 metres World Record Holder Agnes Tirop has been murdered. The 25-year-old athlete was found dead at her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Preliminary reports allege that her husband killed her. But investigations are currently ongoing to get to the root of the matter. The young lady was found with several stab wounds.
The motive for the brutal murder is yet to be known. Athletics Kenya has condoled with the family and friends of Agnes Tirop through a statement released to the media.
Agnes Jebet Tirop is the current World Bronze medal holder in 10000 metres. Kenya has lost yet another important athlete in the most gruesome way. She was one of the fastest rising stars in the athletics world.
It is just last month when she broke an important record in Germany. Jebet broke the women-only record in a 10 km Road to Records Race. She clocked an impressive 30.01 minutes. She also took part in the Valencia Half Marathon last week where she finished second, clocking 30.20 minutes.
The decorated athlete shot to the limelight in 2015 when she won the world cross-country championship. She went to History books as the second youngest athlete ever to achieve that.
Her first ever competitive race was in 2013 in Bydgosccz, Poland. She took part in the World Junior Cross Country Championships and she won the race.
A year later, she won the Africa Cross Country Championship in Kampala, Uganda. It is sad that an athlete of that caliber can lose her life just like that. Her fans are in deep mourning mode after learning about her untimely demise.
There is need for important athletes to be provided with special security by the government. Athletics Kenya and World Athletics bodies should also be concerned about the safety of the athletes. They must start holding the governments accountable whenever things like this happen.
